Judge extends Sherrill decision to Cayuga Nation

The Cayuga Nation of New York is subject to the Sherrill U.S. Supreme Court decision, a federal judge ruled on Wednesday.

In a seven-page decision [PDF], U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd said the tribe's properties in the village of Union Springs are subject to local laws and regulations. He said the Sherrill case made clear that the tribe's assertion of sovereignty will be "disruptive" to the local governance system that has been in place for decades.

The tribe has asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take its land into trust.
