Mark Trahant: The next pick for Federal Reserve job

"I've been taking an informal survey: What kind of person should replace Alan Greenspan as chairman of the Federal Reserve?

Greenspan is supposed to retire at the end of January. President Bush will need to pick a successor in the next month or so in order to wrap up the confirmation process in time.

This appointment should be a big deal because it matters to everyone who spends or saves money. Last week the president told The New York Times he would not say who was being considered, but he added, 'it's important that whomever I pick is viewed as independent from politics.' But what does that mean? What does an independent central banker look like?"
