UND files another appeal over 'Fighting Sioux'

The University of North Dakota has filed a second appeal in hopes of protecting its "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

The appeal was sent to the NCAA Executive Committee. A subcommittee previously rejected the school's attempt to remove "Sioux" from the list of hostile and abusive mascots.

A lawsuit in the federal courts is possible if the appeal fails. UND President Charles Kupchella claims the NCAA's decision has worsened the controversy over the name. "Do you dismiss 80 years of tradition and pride in a logo and say, 'Well, that's irrelevant'?" he tells The Washington Post.

Kupchella has taken pride in noting that the new logo was created by an Indian artists. But The Post notes that the artist is Chippewa, a tribe considered the traditional enemy of the Sioux people.
