Shadow Wolves combat flow of drugs into United States
Wednesday, November 9, 2005
The Shadow Wolves are a unique group of border patrol agents, an all Native force aimed at stopping the flow of illegal drugs into the United States.
The group began in 1972. At the time, its members were from the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona, whose reservation straddles the U.S.-Mexico border.
Members of other tribes are now part of the group. They use traditional tracking techniques, plus modern equipment, to find out who is bringing in drugs and where to find them. In a recent year, they seized about 101,000 pounds of drugs.
The Shadow Wolves are part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security.
