Bill to add land to Pechanga Reservation passes
Wednesday, November 16, 2005

By a voice vote on Tuesday, the House passed a bill to add 991 acres to the Pechanga Reservation in California.

H.R.3507 will transfer two parcels from the Bureau of Land Management to the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians. The land contains sacred rock carvings and is important to the tribe's watershed, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

The tribe has no plans to develop the land. The bill contains a provision that states: "The lands transferred ... may be used only for the protection, preservation, and maintenance of the archaeological, cultural, and wildlife resources thereon."
