Omaha Tribe seeks to combat suicide among youth
Friday, November 18, 2005
The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska has seen 18 suicide attempts since this summer, The Sioux City Journal reports.
None of the attempts were fatal. But local leaders are worried about suicide, which is said to be on the rise among tribes in the state.
As part of the tribe's effort against suicide, Arnold Thomas, a member of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribe in Nevada and Idaho, is speaking to students on the reservation. Now 35, Thomas tried to kill himself after he turned 18.
"What I try to share, number one and foremost, is life is a gift and it's precious," he said in an interview with the paper.
