Sen. Burns took $34K from ex-Abramoff client

Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Montana) took $34,000 from a wealthy tribal client of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Gannett News Service reports.

Burns accepted $23,000 from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan shortly before writing a letter in support of a school construction program that benefited the tribe. He received $11,000 after writing the letter.

Burns denies any wrongdoing. He is chairman of the Senate Interior Appropriations subcommittee, which handles Indian funding.

Burns is said to be one of several lawmakers under scrutiny for ties to Abramoff but a spokesperson said he isn't under investigation and hasn't hired a criminal defense attorney.
