Goshute chairman given more time to settle IRS debt
Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Leon Bear, the chairman of the Skull Valley Band of Goshutes, was given more time to settle his tax debt with the Internal Revenue Service.
Bear pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return. As part of his plea, he has to resolve unpaid taxes on $192,316 but the federal judge said prosecutors have failed to turn over information in a timely manner.
Bear is the main proponent of a controversial nuclear waste facility on the reservation. Some member of the tribe oppose the plan, saying Bear is a corrupt leader who has stolen from the tribe. As part of his plea, Bear has to pay $31,542 in restitution to the tribe.
