Racism against Indians called rampant in Wyoming
Tuesday, February 7, 2006

The Wyoming Select Committee on Tribal Relations [Web Site] listened to stories of discrimination against Indians at a hearing on Monday.

Michelle Hoffman, the superintendent of the school district on the Wind River Reservation, told lawmakers that Indian students are treated poorly when they go on school trips around the state. "It has to stop," she was quoted as saying, The Casper Star-Tribune reported. "I’m embarrassed for my state."

Sandra C’Bearing, a resident of the reservation, said she and her family were repeatedly harassed and treated poorly at a University of Wyoming game. She said the staff questioned her families presence at the game and that other fans taunted her son about his long hair.

Allison Sage, the Northern Arapaho Tribe's liaison to the state, said Indian people are left out of the state's education books. "History can hurt," an Eastern Shoshone council member said, The Star-Tribune reported.
