Gila River governor pushing for vote on freeway
Thursday, April 27, 2006
The governor of the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona is pushing for a vote on a controversial highway proposal.
Officially, the tribe has taken a stand against allowing the South Mountain Freeway to be built on the reservation. But Gov. William Rhodes, who has only been in office four months, says a vote should be held in light of high interest in the project.
Many individual landowners don't want the freeway on their land. But the tribe is facing pressure from surrounding communities.
