Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe reaches land-use deal
Friday, April 28, 2006

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts and the town of Aquinnah signed a new land-use agreement that both sides hope will avoid future disputes.

The tribe and the town were parties in a landmark case. The state's highest court ruled that the tribe can be sued for not complying with the town's land-use laws.

The agreement seeks to avoid court battles if disputes arise. Both the tribe and the town would have a say over regulation of tribal properties within town limits.

The tribal council and residents of the town must vote on the agreement before it becomes final.
