Standing Rock Sioux Tribe won't back 'Sioux' name

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe refused to change its stance against the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.

Tribal leaders debated the issue at a council hearing on Thursday. Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder called for the removal of council member Archie Fool Bear after Fool Bear sent a letter to UND that indicated support for the name. Fool Bear also called for the removal of His Horse Is Thunder.

UND had cited Fool Bear's letter in hopes of gaining approval to continue using the "Fighting Sioux" name during post-season tournaments. But the NCAA rejected the school's appeal and said the tribe hasn't changed its views.
