Gila River governor pushes for study of freeway

Gov. William Rhodes, the recently elected leader of the Gila River Indian Community of Arizona, is pushing for a study of a freeway that has been rejected by the tribe several times in recent years.
Rhodes wants to create a special committee to address the potential impacts of the state freeway. But the council passed a resolution in 2000 that forbids a study. The council recently reaffirmed its position and a council committee recently rejected the idea as well.
The state Department of Transportation says placing a part of the freeway on the reservation is possible.
