Great Plains tribes, schools sue BIA over reorganization

Nearly a dozen tribes and reservation schools in North and South Dakota sued the Bureau of Indian Affairs on Wednesday to halt the reorganization of Indian education programs.

The tribes said the BIA is restructuring the Office of Indian Education Programs without adequate consultation. They asked a judge for an injunction pending further consultation.

Under the reorganization, the BIA plans to eliminates six education line offices that provide services at the reservation level. The six reservation offices will be replaced with three regional offices that are located far from tribal and BIA schools, the lawsuit states.

The reorganization seeks to beef up the management at the OIEP, soon to be called the Bureau of Indian Education.
