Inquiry into Native man's death hears last witness
Thursday, June 29, 2006

The inquiry into the death of Dudley George, a Native activist, heard from its last witness on Wednesday.

George was shot and killed by an Ontario Park Police officer on September 6, 1995. The officers had raided Ipperwash Provincial Park in order to oust Native protesters who were occupying it as part of a land claim dispute.

The officer was later found guilty of criminal negligence. He died in a car crash earlier this year, just two weeks before he was to testify about his involvement in what became a national and political scandal.

The inquiry was called to find out what led to the raid on the park. Some 140 witnesses provided testimony, some of it highly charged due to racist language used to describe the Native protesters.
