Hundreds walk in memory of slain Shoshone child
Wednesday, July 5, 2006

A "Walk for Hope" was held on Monday in memory of Marcela Hope Yellowbear, a 22-month-old Shoshone girl who lost her life in August 2002.

Hundreds of Eastern Shoshones, Northern Arapahos and non-Indians took part in the walk, which started at the Wind River Casino and ended in Riverton, where Yellowbear died. Ivan Posey, the chairman of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe, was one of several speakers.

Yellowbear died after enduring severe abuse at the hands of her mother and father. Her father, Andrew Yellowbear Jr., was convicted of first-degree murder but is challenging the state's jurisdiction over the crime. Her mother, Macalia Blackburn, pleaded guilty to being an accessory to second-degree murder.
