Residential school students not getting compensation
Thursday, July 6, 2006

Some former students of residential schools in Canada aren't getting the compensation they hoped for.

Canada agreed to a $1.9 billion settlement for students who endured sexual, physical and emotional abuse at government-sponsored schools. The first payments-- $8,000 to elders over the age of 65 -- have been mailed out.

But not everyone is getting a check. Joe Prince, an elder, applied for money but was told there is no record of him attending a residential school.

The government has sent about 700 checks but doesn't have a record of how many rejections have been sent.
