Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe seeks affordable housing

With federal recognition at hand, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is focusing on one of its biggest needs: housing.

The majority of the tribe's members live in and around the town of Mashpee but prices on Cape Cod have made it difficult for them to find affordable housing. A tribal survey found that 50 percent were paying more than half of their gross income on housing.

To address the situation, the tribe is forming a housing advisory board that will develop a long-term plan. The tribe will then seek funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The tribe's recognition is being finalized in March 2007.
