Highly toxic algae found in Klamath River

The Karuk Tribe of California has reported a record level of toxic algae in Klamath River reservoirs.

The extremely high concentration prompted state and federal officials to declare a health emergency. Breathing vapors from the algae can cause illness and swallowing water could lead to organ failure and other problems.

According to the tribe's consultant, water samples from the reservoirs showed algae concentrations 3,900 times higher than the state's standard.
