Federal Recognition
Virginia tribal recognition bill remains in limbo

A bill to extend federal recognition to six Virginia tribes remains in limbo.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing on the bill in June. But it was abruptly pulled from the agenda when it came time for the panel to send it to the Senate floor.

Sen. John W. Warner (R-Virginia) is now wavering on his support for the bill. He said he is concerned that recognition could open the door to gaming.

Rep. James P. Moran (D-Virginia) and Sen. George Allen (R-Virginia) support recognition for he Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Tribe Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, the Monacan Tribe and the Nansemond Tribe. Their bill would not contain any prohibition on gaming.

Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Virginia) opposes recognition. He says it will lead to a casino in Virginia.
