Suspect pleads not guilty to beating of Navajo man
Tuesday, September 12, 2006
One of the suspects in the beating of Navajo man pleaded not guilty on Monday.
C.L. Carnie, 20, is one of three young white males charged with beating the June 4 beating of 46-year-old William Blackie. The incident occurred in Farmington, New Mexico, a town near the Navajo Nation.
Blackie said the males shouted racial slurs at him. The beating raised fears of racial prejudice and led the prosecutor to file a hate crimes motion.
The two other suspects, an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old, have pleaded not guilty.
