Courts review $1.9B Native school abuse deal

Courts across Canada are reviewing the $1.9 billion settlement for Native victims of residential school abuse.
Judges in several provinces must approve the deal before it is finalized. They are holding public hearings to determine whether the payout is fair to those who suffered physical, sexual, mental and emotional abuse.
Under the proposed deal, claimants will receive $10,000 for the first year they attended a school, plus $3,000 for subsequent years. People who were sexually or physically abused or suffered psychological damage can receive additional settlements of between $5,000 and $275,000.
Other funds are set aside for a healing fund, a truth and reconciliation process and commemorative projects. Lawyers will receive about $100 million.
