HIV/AIDS on the rise among Native Americans
Wednesday, September 27, 2006
The HIV/AIDS rate is rising among American Indians and Alaska Natives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the year 2001, the rate was 9.5 cases per 100,000. In 2004, it grew to 11.1 cases per 100,000.
Overall, the number of HIV/AIDS cases among Native Americans are less than 1 percent of the total cases in the United States. But the rate is the third highest in the nation, behind African-Americans and Hispanics.
The increasing infection rate and the causes for it were discussed at the recent Embracing Our Traditions conference, which was held in Anchorage in May.
