Arizona county works to improve Native vote

Officials in Pima County, Arizona, have been working to increase Native voter turnout.

The county's tribal outreach coordinator is Charlene Begay, a member of the Navajo Nation. Along with Noel Day, the director of the county's outreach program, Begay has been visiting the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe to keep them informed about election issues.

Begay says Native voters can play a key role in elections. She cites the 55 percent Native vote turnout for a proposition that legalized casino gaming and the election of Gov. Janet Napolitano (D).

But Day says politicians have mostly ignored tribes this year. He said none of them have visited the Tohono O'odham Nation or the Pascua Yaqui Tribe.
