Skull Valley Goshute election results contested

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is being asked to hold a new election for the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians in Utah.

The BIA conducted the election, from balloting to counting of the votes. Blaine Bear, a losing candidate chairman, says the agency's process was flawed [PDF].

The election resulted in the ouster of chairman Leon Bear, who had called himself "chief for life." His uncle, Lawrence Bear, was elected chairman.

The new leadership appears to support a deal Leon Bear signed with a consortium of energy companies to store up to 44,000 tons of nuclear waste on the reservation. But the Interior Department rejected the lease in September.
