Dictionary to help preserve Han Athabaskan language

The Alaska Native Language Center has published the first dictionary of Han Athabaskan, one of the most endangered languages in Alaska.

Only seven or eight people in Alaska and two more in Canada still use the language. The youngest speaker in Eagle Village is 56.

The Alaska elders helped the center create the dictionary for Han, which is similar to other Athabaskan languages like Gwich'in, spoken in Alaska and Canada, and Apache, spoken in the Southwest and Oklahoma.
