Lakota candidate loses House election in South Dakota
Wednesday, November 8, 2006

Bruce Whalen, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, was easily defeated by incumbent Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D) for South Dakota's lone Congressional seat.

Early returns showed Herseth with 70 percent of the vote. Whalen had been trailing in polls conducted prior to the election.

Herseth is extremely popular among tribal members. In all of her campaigns, she has won the overwhelming majority of reservation votes.
