Anti-Oneida group denies racist statement against tribe

The leader of a group that is fighting the Oneida Nation on several fronts denies making racist statements against the New York tribe.

David Vickers, the president of Upstate Citizens for Equality, said he wasn't advocating violence against the tribe when he said "These people can't be shot" on a local radio show. He was talking about the group's decision to go to court to fight the tribe on land-into-trust and gaming issues.

In response, the tribe said Vickers "is seeding the language of racial hatred throughout Upstate New York and stirring up threats of violence." Vickers denies being anti-Indian.
