Pequot couple first to receive loan for housing

A family from the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut signed the first mortgage for a home on the reservation.

Jason and Tammy Shourds are taking part in a new tribal program that assigns land to tribal families. That enables them to use the land as collateral for a home loan.

The Shourds obtained a $417,000 mortgage from a local bank. Any foreclosure proceedings will be handled in tribal court, and the land will stay in tribal hands.
