Nez Perce Tribe supports delisting of wolves

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho says the proposed delisting of wolves from the Endangered Species Act represents the suceess of its management program.

Wolves are highly regarded by the tribe, said chairwoman Rebecca Miles. The tribe reintroduced them to the northern part of the state at a time when Republican lawmakers were trying to stop the animal from gaining ground.

The tribe later signed a management agreement with former governor Dirk Kempthorne, who is now Interior Secretary for the Bush administration. Interior plans to remove about 1,200 wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming from the endangered and threatened list within a year.
