DOJ budget slashes funds for tribal courts and jails

Funding for tribal courts and detention centers has been eliminated in the Department of Justice budget, The Gallup Independent reports.

The fiscal year 2008 budget eliminates $12 million for Indian Country detention centers and $7 million for tribal courts. Another $4 million tribal grant program was also eliminated.

The cuts mean tribes will have to make do with money from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The agency's budget includes $16 million for a new Safe Indian Communities Initiative, aimed at combating methamphetamine by hiring more law enforcement officers and more staff for detention facilities.
