Nearly two dozen suicide attempts on First Nation

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Phil Fontaine says Kashechewan First Nation in Ontario is in crisis after 21 young people attempted suicide in the last month alone.

A 9-year-old was among those who tried to commit suicide, according to the Canadian Press. One 20-year-old man succeeded.

The community made headlines in late 2005 when the Ontario government evacuated all 1,100 residents after E.coli, a deadly bacteria, was found in the water system. Tribal members have had a hard time readjusting because the same problems remain, a tribal leader said.
