Hopi Tribe elects chairman in special election

Ben Nuvamsa won election as chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona by 78 votes in what was termed a low-turnout race.

Nuvamsa faced Harry Nutumya in the special election. Nuvamsa was ahead by just two votes before absentee ballots put him over the top.

Nutumya said Nuvamsa did not meet the residency requirement to hold public office. But the tribal council ruled that Nuvamsa proved he lived on the reservation for at least two years prior to the election.

The special election was called because former chairman Ivan Sidney was removed from office following an alcohol-related incident off the reservation.
