Disputed Hopi chairman wants to get to work
Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Ben Nuvamsa, the recently elected chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, said calls for a new vote are getting in the way of important matters.

Nuvamsa won a special election earlier this month but some council members say he failed to meet the tribe's residency requirements. They want to call an entirely new election.

Nuvamsa says the election board, the only entity with authority over the matter, certified his run. He said the tribe should focus on fighting President Bush's budget cuts, water rights and other issues.

"The Bush Administration for the FY2008 budget is slashing Indian programs by about $700 million. Those are issues that we need to be talking about, not this thing about residency," Nuvamsa told The Gallup Independent.
