Artman's nomination held up by GOP senators

Several Republican senators are holding up the nomination of Carl Artman to head the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Country Today reports.

Artman was approved unanimously by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee on February 1. But he won't receive a floor vote unless the Senate objections are overcome.

Last year, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) held up the nomination, according to ICT. Jackie Johnson, the executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, said Republicans were concerned about Artman's dealings with gaming.

Artman worked for his tribe, the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, on gaming, land-into-trust and other issues. The tribe is seeking an off-reservation casino in New York.
