Tule River Tribe seeks cross-deputization in county

The Tule River Tribe of California is getting closer to having its police officers cross-deputized in Tulare County.

The tribe formed a police department last December. The tribe pays for three county sheriff's deputies to patrol the reservation.

The tribe wants to add its own officers and with cross-deputization, they will be able to enforce state laws against non-Indians. The Porterville City Council supports the effort.

California falls under Public Law 280, which grants the state criminal and civil jurisdiction over Indian Country.
