Nebraska governor to discuss Native youth suicide

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R) plans to visit the Santee Sioux Reservation and meet with tribal leaders to discuss youth suicide.

The Santee Sioux Tribe has suffered a rash of suicides. Since September 2005, at least three teens have committed suicide. Last year, three more attempted suicide on a reservation with 1,000 tribal members.

Tribal leaders met in January to discuss ways to address the problem. One suggestion was a state task force but Heineman says tribes can use an already existing state suicide prevention task force, according to Judi Morgan gaiashkibos of the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs.
