Report promotes benefits of higher education

A new report from the Institute for Higher Education Policy and the American Indian Higher Education Consortium highlights the benefits of higher education for Native Americans.

The report says Native students who attend college bring economic benefits to their communities. Their income levels rise, their overall health improves and they are more involved in their community, according to the study.

Despite the benefits, American Indians and Alaska Natives face barriers to higher education, mostly financial. The report recommends increased funding for Pell Grants and other student and learning outcome programs.

According to the study, more than a quarter of Native Americans lacked a high school diploma, compared to just 15 percent of the general population.
