Blackfeet Nation water deal draws complaints

A proposed water compact between the Blackfeet Nation and the state of Montana drew criticism at a public meeting on Tuesday.

The deal would settle a long-running dispute over water rights. The tribe, the state and the federal government have been negotiating for more than 20 years.

Down river users, however, say the compact will hurt the economy. They told the Montana Reserved Water Rights Compact Commission that they will lose water to farm their land.

The commission is holding another meeting on Thursday.
