Sand Creek Massacre Site formally dedicated

About 400 people attended the dedication ceremony for the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Colorado.

The site marks the November 29, 1864, slaughter of at least 160 Cheyenne and Arapaho children, women and elders. Their peaceful camp was attacked by Col. John Chivington and a group of state militiamen.

"If there were any savages that day, it was not the Indian people," said retired Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado), a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana, according to news reports. Campbell wrote legislation that made it possible for the site to be finalized.

Cheyenne and Arapaho descendants attended the ceremony on Friday.
