Editorial: Lumbee Tribe takes step to recognition
Thursday, May 3, 2007

"We don't have a principled objection to gambling, believing it to be just another form of entertainment that provides the chance - long as it may be - for a participant to leave with more money than he arrived with.

But we are mindful of gambling's trappings. It is addictive, and for those who succumb to its lure, it can have devastating and life-altering consequences.

So color us not disappointed with last week's news that the Lumbees forfeited any gaming rights so they could kick the ball toward federal recognition farther down the road. It was a substantial concession to make, but was prudent given the mood on Capitol Hill following the Jack Abramoff scandal.

As Arlinda Locklear, a federal recognition attorney for the tribe, said: “Indian gaming has gotten so out of hand that no one wants to touch it.”"
