BIA names new director for Rocky Mountain region

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has named Ed Parisian, a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana, as director for the Rocky Mountain region.

Parisian most recently served as director and acting director of the Office of Indian Education Programs, now known as the Bureau of Indian Education. He was one of two officials faulted for the death of a 16-year-old student at a BIA boarding school in Oregon.

Parisian was instrumental in the reorganization of the OIEP. In a lawsuit, however, he conceded that he failed to adequately consult tribes about the changes.

"Ed Parisian is an experienced administrator who will bring a fresh perspective to the Rocky Mountain Region," Pat Ragsdale, the director of the BIA, said in a statement. "I am pleased to have him as a member of the BIA's team of regional senior executives."
