Vote expected on Virginia recognition bill

The House is expected to take up H.R.1294, a bill to recognize six Virginia tribes.

The bill passed the House Natural Resources Committee on April 25. A report was issued by the committee yesterday and a rule to allow for one hour debate was ordered.

The bill recognizes the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, the Chickahominy Indian Tribe-Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, Inc., the Monacan Indian Nation, and the Nansemond Indian Tribe. An amendment bars them from engaging in gaming.
