Seminole Tribe gives back to high school

The Seminole Tribe of Florida is giving back to the public school that opened its doors to tribal members when other schools refused to enroll them.

The tribe is a major supporter of the athletic department at the Okeechobee High School. From a scoreboard for the softball team to a football scrimmage hosted on the Brighton Reservation, the tribe has been donating $5,000 to $6,000 a year.

"The coaching staff was very supportive of Seminole athletes to the point where the football coach at that time would transport our athletes to the reservation after practice," Michele Thomas, an attorney for the tribe, told The Palm Beach Post. "Now we're in a position where we can give back."

This year, the tribe is supporting the softball team's trip to the state championships. "They've been behind me and the entire team, and they do a lot for the school," said junior Mary Huff, a player and tribal member.
