Lender accused of bias against Native Americans

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition filed suit against NovaStar Mortgage, alleging the lender is violating federal law by refusing to write loans for homes on reservations.

NCRC says NovaStar has a blanket policy against Native loans. Qualified applicants were turned down "solely on the fact that their property is located on an Indian reservation," the group says.

A spokesperson for NovaStar acknowledged the firm doesn't extend home loans in Indian Country, citing complex legal issues. But NCRC says federal programs address some of those issues.

The suit also accuses NovaStart of discriminating against African-Americans and the disabled.
