Pojoaque Pueblo seeks to improve phone service

Pojoaque Pueblo wants to improve telephone service on three reservations in northern New Mexico.

Service to the area is currently provided by Qwest Communication. The tribe signed a new contract with the Mescalero Apache Nation's telecommunications provider and now wants to purchase the telephone exchange that serves the Pojoaque, San Ildefonso and Nambé reservations.

The tribe says Mescalero Apache Telecom Inc will improve service to 3,500 customers served by the 455 telephone exchange. But the state Public Regulation Commission to seek a formal inquiry, citing a potential impact on 50,000 residents in the area.

Qwest says it is negotiating but no deal has been reached.
