Rep. Jefferson indicted on corruption charges

Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-Louisiana) was indicted on 16 charges of corruption on Monday.

Jefferson is accused of offering and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. He allegedly collected $400,000, federal prosecutors said, and stood to gain more if business ventures in the U.S. and in Africa were successful.

Jefferson denied any wrongdoing. He was re-elected last November with 57 percent of the vote.
