Canada's Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice hailed a proposal to create a commission that would resolve hundreds of outstanding land claims.
The Conservative administration plans to spend $250 million a year for 10 years to create an independent panel with the power to make rulings on the 800 pending land claims. Prentice called the proposal a "major breakthrough." [Specific Claims Action Plan].
Assembly of First Nations Chief Phil Fontaine praised the proposed legislation. Tribal leaders plan to hold a First Nations Day of Action on June 29 to call attention to their issues.
