Cayuga Nation seeks more land placed in trust

The Cayuga Nation of New York is seeking to have more land placed in trust.

The tribe recently purchased 181 acres in Seneca County, bringing its total holding there to 195 acres. The tribe also owns 163 acres in Cayuga County.

"The Cayuga Nation is going to keep buying land and keep moving it into trust until there is an agreement to do otherwise," tribal attorney Daniel J. French told The Syracuse Post-Standard.

The tribe has reached a settlement with the state to acquire no more than 10,000 acres in trust in the two counties. But residents and some local officials are questioning the deal.

The tribe had a 64,000-acre reservation but the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a land claim was filed too late.
