Teen pleads not guilty to toddler's murder

A teen from the Fort Totten Reservation in North Dakota pleaded not guilty to the death of his girlfriend's 21-month-old daughter.

James Alberts Jr. is 17 but is being tried as an adult in Ramsey County District Court. He is accused of killing Katrina Ann Rardon while his girlfriend was out of the home.

Alberts suffers from mild mental retardation, his lawyers said. But two state psychologists said he can function as an adult.

The reservation is home to the Spirit Lake Nation.
